Suicide mortality rates have been steadily rising in Taiwan, and suicide has been among the top -ten causes of death for the last consecutive eight years . In response to this situation , the Taiwan
Department of Health assigned the Taiwanese Society of suicidology the task of setting up the
Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center.The mission of the Center is suicide prevention and the facilitation
of efficient related care delivery system networks nationwide. The Center will also standardize the
national suicide report format and care delivery system , improve mental health service quality ,
and organize community support networks. It pursues an encompassing health care mechanism
model,where clients are considered the first priority,family a basic supporting unit, and community
a solid foundation. The Center will offer a helping hand for individuals who have attempted suicide,
maintaining a spirit of showing positive values and achieving mutual benefits.
The Center objectives include connecting medical resources related to suicide prevention in the
community, implementing a pilot plan, promoting a"Depression Co-caring System", and analyzing
the cost benefit for each of its programs to form a strong foundation for future work. The Center will
provide continuous training and certification to strengthen the abilities of all individuals involved in
dealing with depression and intervention to prevent suicide attempts.The overall objective of the
Center goal is to reduce the suicide rate and improve the mental health of the entire community.
The Center will provide educational materials which cover the most relevant and up-to-date information on depression and suicide prevention.Online courses and information will allow the
community easy access from home to learn about and assist in suicide prevention efforts. All of the
efforts made by the Center are intended to promote the core values of "Cherishing Life, Restoring
Hope", and that "Suicide Prevention is Everybody’s Business".
